It is once again that time of year in which I am reminded that sonnets are a thing by one of my teachers, and yet again, I take on the daunting task of somehow turning biology into poetry. In my freshman year creative writing class, I wrote a series of sonnets about glycolysis.
Now, I take on plant hormones with the assistance of a friend who is a calcium chloride and cat enjoyer. (She enjoys canning cats in a can chock-full of calcium chloride). Note I've almost certainly messed up the meter.
Without further ado..
From indoleacetic acid comes shoot,
Hormone produced by the apical tip,
Cause bending to the sun in a pursuit,
Expand! Watch proton pumps hydrogen ship,
The vertical growth done by auxin here,
But foolish seedlings gibberellins have,
Causes cells to elongate without fear,
And to, at short plants, actually laugh,
Gibberellins come from the endosperm,
To cause seed germination rapidly,
Abscisic acid produces seed dorm,
And drought response created actively,
Writing this sonnet is so difficult,
Alas, alas! I'm joining a plant cult.
Should I make a second sequel sonnet about strigolactones, jasmonates, and cytokinins? Perhaps..
